“Over 30% of the total document holdings in DEWR's electronic document management system (WIMS) are emails. Before DEWR had WIMS these emails were stored in staff's personal email holdings so there was no access to this body of corporate knowledge. Much of this information was simply lost when staff left the department. Since the implementation of WIMS these emails are now accessible as a corporate resource. WIMS also allows for easy sharing of documents. When corporate documents are distributed by email, staff can be sure they are seeing the latest version of the document as a link is sent out to original document stored in WIMS, rather than sending out multiple copies via email. This also has the advantage of minimising impact on the network."
